Fire officials are reminding residents looking to celebrate the Victoria Day long weekend with a bang in Barrie of some things to consider before setting off fireworks.

According to Barrie fire, a city bylaw is restrictive on who can use fireworks and where they can be set off:

  • Users must be 18 years of age
  • Fireworks cannot be used within 300 metres of a hospital, nursing home, school or church
  • Fireworks can’t be used within eight metres of a building, tent, camp, shelter or motor vehicle
  • Fireworks can’t be used if wind speeds exceed 40 km/h

Officials say misuse of fireworks can be extremely dangerous and recommend leaving usage to professionals.
