For the first time in over 40 days, Environment Canada is forecasting temperatures above the freezing mark.
According to Environment Canada climate records, it was on Jan. 24, that the Barrie region posted a temperature of 0.6 C. That’s 43 days as of Sunday since the mercury pushed past 0 C.
In total this year, Environment Canada has only recorded two other days aside from Jan. 24 where temperatures were in the positive, all of which were in January. The hottest day this year was on Jan. 18, when the thermometer hit 4 C. The only other day was Jan. 23 when the region registered 1.3 C.
During this time frame the region saw an approximate average temperature of -14 C. On numerous occasions over the last two months, the weather authority issued extreme cold weather warnings as temperatures felt like -40 C with the wind chill.
However, this is all about to change. Environment Canada is predicting temperatures on Monday to hit a high of 4 C, and it doesn’t stop there. On Tuesday, the mercury is forecast to hit a balmy high of 7 C.
This warmer trend above the freezing mark is expected to last until at least Saturday.
