Bright blue skies and crisp white snow were the rule across the region on Sunday as temperatures climbed close to the freezing mark for the second day in a row.
Carol Syrnyk says it's been a cold winter so far, but conditions on the ski slopes are excellent.
“Super cold but today is super bonus so we are loving it. Not a stitch of ice hero snow we call it, carving it up,” she says.
In Wasaga Beach, the blueberry trail system was busy with skiers and snowshoers. Yves Hiel says it was too nice a day to pass up.
“We are definitely going to enjoy this as the week goes on because conditions are fantastic and the weather is getting warmer just get out there and enjoy it,” Hiel says.
While milder weather is in the forecast, ski resorts in the region are in a good position for an extended season because there is more than enough snow on the slopes to last through to March Break and beyond.
Mount St. Louis anticipates staying open until early April and Blue Mountain will stay open as long as possible. Last year Blue stayed open until April 27.
“We have more than 150 centimetres snow across all of our runs, so we are in great shape to head into spring skiing,” says Tara Lovell, a spokesperson for Blue Mountain Resort.
Snowmobilers could enjoy an extended season too. According to the Mid Ontario Snowmobile Club, trails are in excellent shape and may offer many sledding opportunities through the March Break
“Grooming has been great, the trails have been nice and great conditions. Ya, a beautiful day for snowmobiling,” says Mitchell Hoday.
As mild as it felt on Sunday, it was still a bit cooler than normal for this time of year. Normal day time highs should be about 2 C.
