Thursday’s snow was not good news for people in Muskoka who are watching water levels.

Huntsville residents put sandbags in front of businesses on Thursday and despite flood warning signs some drivers continued to take chances passing through flooded areas.

Officials with the Huntsville Fire Department say floodwaters were higher in the downtown core on Thursday but they believe the worst could be over.

“At the top of Lake Vernon, the levels are coming down a bit,” says Mike Vadlja with Huntsville Fire. “This area will see a little bit of a rise over the next 24 hours or so and then we should see everything subside.”

The Ministry of Natural Resources says most of the snowmelt is finished in Algonquin Park and that means there shouldn’t be much more water to push levels up around Huntsville.

Bracebridge generally receives the flood waters from Huntsville and the town’s fire chief says he’s confident that the town will not receive heavy flooding this spring.

“This is what I would call typical spring flooding that we see on an ongoing basis every three or four years – it’s not to the extreme we saw in 2013,” says Bracebridge Fire Chief Murray Medley.
