BARRIE -- It was dig out day for most across the region with Southern Ontario is seeing one of its biggest snowstorms this winter.

Overnight, Barrie and the surrounding area was hit with about 20 centimetres causing people to spend most of their Sunday cleaning it up.

"it's been taking long, like forty-five minutes to an hour," one resident said.

It wasn't misery for everyone, though. Even with a balmy -21 C, one homeowner was out shovelling in shorts.

"I wear shorts all year. I've got warm legs," he said.

Approximately 40 sanders and plows from the City of Barrie were out in full force along with 20 sidewalk machines over the last 24 hour.

"We will be applying salt on our primary routes as per usual, and residential areas get accommodations with a sand salt mixture," said Craig Morton, manager of roads for the City of Barrie.

In Stayner, people are still seeing stormy weather. Parts of the town on Sunday experiencing whiteout conditions for most of the morning; but for snowmobilers it was a welcomed sight.

"It's time to ride," a resident said.

The City of Barrie is reminding the public to make sure your cars are not parked on roadways and streets overnight so that the plows can do their job of clearing excess snow and ice in time for tomorrow's commute.
