There’s new funding for an elementary school in one of the county’s fast-growing communities.

The province said today it would fund that new school in Alcona and an addition to Victoria Harbour Elementary School near Midland.

The Simcoe County District School Board had included an Alcona school in its business cases submitted to the province in 2013.

“This is great news for these communities,” says board chair Peter Beacock in a news release. “Staff worked diligently to prepare business cases to help the Ministry of Education understand our needs.”

The new Alcona public school will be built on the east side of Webster Boulevard, south of the 7th Line.

The board says the new school should help balance enrolment at nearby Alcona Glen and Goodfellow elementary schools. Those schools are under pressure as the population grows.

Meanwhile, the addition to Victoria Harbour comes after a Pupil Accommodation Review in the 2011-2012 school year.

The Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board is getting an addition at Marie of Incarnation Catholic School in Bradford.

Construction is set to start next spring, and a school takes about a year to build. The board says it would like have the new school open by the fall of 2016.
