Some of Barrie’s finest gathered Thursday night to honour their own at the Barrie Police Service awards.

But it wasn’t just police being honoured; awards were handed out to civilians who stepped up to save the lives of others.

One awarded handed out included a service and merit award for Constable Kevin Beirnes and his dog Bullet. They were honoured for tracking suspects in a break and enter for eight kilometres. An honour made even more special as Constable Beirnes and Bullet are both retiring.

“It’s a proud moment, I had a great career for 33 years and had great K9 career so this will stay close to my heart for a long time,” said Constable Beirnes.

Constable Beirnes helped bring the K9 Unit to Barrie and says he’s looking forward to retiring at the end of the month. Meantime, Bullet has been promised a lifetime supply of chew toys as a retirement gift from the Barrie Police Service.
