With spring and melting snow, a lot of trash starts showing up.

But it’s not just garbage that's been buried under snow banks. There's also a lot of trash dumped illegally. It’s all been made worse by the high wind Monday.

Blue boxes are no challenge for the wind. And it made a real mess out here.

“Coffee cups, water bottles. You see it all. See it all,” says Doug Roush of the mess the wind made today.

Beyond that, there’s a growing concern with the amount of illegally dumped trash. The town of Oro-Medonte received several complaints about it this weekend. CTV crews saw a couch, mattress, and kitchen table tossed away along the 5/6 Sideroad.

Town officials say people can be charged up to $10,000 for leaving furniture like this along the road.

“We have had three or four calls today alone” says Curtis Shelswell who works with the town of Oro-Medonte. “People have been reporting the junk to us. It's a lot for us in a short period of time.”

From Midhurst to Barrie, CTV crews saw everything from hockey nets to kitchen sinks along the road while researching this story.

Waste officials in Barrie and Oro-Medonte say they will pick up the messy trash along the side of the road. But they encourage people to call in and let them know if they see someone dumping trash.

Most communities allow residents to drop off free trash every year at the land fill. The City of Barrie allows residents to get rid of 100 kilograms of garbage for free.
