It was tight race in Newmarket-Aurora, but the Liberals have upset the Conservatives.

Kyle Peterson was declared the victor on Monday night by CTV News. He defeated four other candidates including Conservative incumbent Lois Brown and NDP candidate Yvonne Brown.

Peterson currently serves as director of the United Way of York Region. This is his second time running in the riding.

Brown was the incumbent heading into the election; she was voted in as Member of Parliament in 2008.

The boundaries of the riding have changed, which created some uncertainty as to whether the Conservatives could hold the riding.

On Sunday, Newmarket was a stop for Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper.
