The Barrie Soccer Club Spiritfest tournament is continuing June 2, 2013 in the shadow of an altercation spurred on by an alleged racial slur.

Few people at the tournament today were willing to talk about the altercation.

The coach of the Kitchener team, one of the teams reportedly on the field when the brawl broke out, told CTV Barrie the situation has been blown out of proportion and refused to comment further. Some parents from the team, however, did say a racial slur was used but declined to be interviewed.

Today, the Barrie Soccer Club says nothing happened and would only confirm police were called to protect a referee.

Referees are responsible for managing behaviour both on the pitch and on the sidelines. Referees can ask spectators to leave a game if they show aggressive or violent behaviour.

Saturday, police were called to break up the argument, which happened at a tournament featuring teams from across Ontario visiting Barrie.

Barrie police say an argument broke out between parents from a Kitchener team and parents from a Barrie team. During the argument, one of the parents allegedly uttered racial slurs. Police say about 30 people became involved in the fight. No charges were laid.
