A Thursday morning fire has forced a family from their New Tecumseth home.

Nearly 30 firefighters were called to a home on the 13th Line, near Sideroad 15 after smoke was spotted coming from the rooftop just before 9 a.m.

Fire officials report that crews had a hard time not only because of the heat, but because getting to the course was a challenge.

“Access to the attic is the most difficult part of fighting an attic fire.  Usually access hatches don't accommodate a firefighter wearing an airpack, so getting to the actual scene of the fire is the most difficult part of a fire in the attic," says deputy fire chief Simon Worley.

Investigators say there is heavy damage to the upper part of the house.

“We've got roof damage, we've got damage to the roof trusses,” he says. “Fire did start somewhere in the attic area and progressed fully along the attic so we do have some significant damage to the roof structure."

One firefighter was taken to hospital for dehydration.

A cause is not yet known, but damage is pegged at $50,000.
