All over our region, families were enjoying a day off outside.

Owen Hoisa knows what today is all about – “spending time with my family.”

And that's what dozens of families were doing today at Ives Park in Stayner.

“It means spending time with your family and friends, it's about relaxing with your family,” says Brooklyn Downey.

Today's skate was organized by the Clearview Fire Department – a group of volunteer fire fighters who not only organize this annual skate but also volunteer their time to keep the outdoor rink in tip-top shape. They flood it every night throughout the winter.

“It's a small town so we hear from a lot of people that they appreciate what we do and that's really all we need to justify keep doing it,” says firefighter Jace Metheral.

At Sweetwater Park in Oro-Medonte, meanwhile, Family Day took a competitive turn with cardboard toboggan races.

At Snow Valley, families made their way down the hill in a more traditional manner. Since the first Family Day in 2008, ski resorts say this long weekend has become just as busy for them as the Christmas break.

And it helped that the sun was out this weekend and the past few days haven't been as bitterly cold as many over the past few months.
