A developmental boom in Collingwood and The Blue Mountains is helping create jobs.
So far this year, the value of construction in Collingwood is already more than $45 million. That's three times what it was this time last year.
Bill Plewes, the town’s chief building official, says much of that growth is fuelled by large developments designed for seniors.
“We are getting seniors’ apartments right now. As well as a lot of single family dwellings, as people move up from Toronto to live in our area.”
In The Blue Mountains, the value of building permits issued is also up substantially. Here it's high-end homes and chalets that are being built.
Contractors say this is where people are building their dream homes.
“I've been around here building homes for 27 years and this is the busiest I have ever been,” says David Harrington of Absolute Craftsman.
The Southern Georgian Bay Association of Realtors also set new records in May.
The association reports 423 homes changed hands. That’s up 36 per cent from last year.
