A 52-year-old Barrie man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a man in a rooming house in 2013.

Ernie Richards was original charged with first-degree murder of 58-year-old Michael Baker but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea deal.

Richards and Baker, who lived in the same rooming house, got into a fight over $15 and Richards later admitted to police that he had killed Baker by choking him and that he tried to make Baker’s death look like a suicide.

Richards will have no chance of parole for 12 years.
