With shovels and snow blowers in hand, people right across the region are digging out.

Environment Canada says 13 to 16 centimetres of snow fell in Barrie overnight. An estimated 22 centimetres fell in Orillia, while 20 fell in Coldwater.

“I pushed a bit of snow out of the way last night and I had to pack up early because it was coming down pretty hard,” says Chris Randell.

But it was Windsor that received the most amount of snow. Environment Canada says 29 centimetres fell.

All snowfall warnings and watches ended on Monday morning.

On the roads, this latest dumping of snow has proven difficult. Across the GTA, the OPP say they have responded to about 400 crashes over the past 24 hours.

Families relying on school buses were put in a tough spot this morning. Buses in Simcoe County, Trillium Lakelands, Nipissing Parry Sound and Durham Region were cancelled.

At Pearson International Airport, about 100 flights have been cancelled so far. Travellers are being advised to check the status of their flights ahead of time.

But the snow is good news for local tourism spots. Ski hills are open and soon snowmobile trails will be ready.

“Everybody is getting geared up,” says Gary Taylor of Wasaga Snowmobile Club. “I'm getting phone calls. Guys wanting to know if they need to be available to start grooming. A far cry from last year."

The trails didn't open last season until mid-January because of mild conditions, which also cut the season short.

Groomers were out Monday inspecting and packing some trails in Essa and Wasaga Beach.  Some trails could open by this weekend, which would be the earliest start in a decade.

However, club officials are pleading with snowmobilers to hold off until the trials are deemed safe to ride. Right now there are too many hazards.

Anyone caught on the trails before they're officially opened, will be fined for trespassing and won't be covered by insurance for any mishaps.

Environment Canada is forecasting another four centimetres of snow over the next two days, with more by the end of the week.
