Investigators are sifting through the remains of 17 homes in Mount Albert after a fire ripped through the housing development on Friday afternoon.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office was at the scene on Saturday, probing what police are considering to be a suspicious fire. A cause and damage estimate is still unknown.
“They will be going through witness statements from the community, firefighters, and sifting through all the evidence and remains and will be putting that together and hopefully we will come up with the origin and the cause,” says East Gwillimbury Fire Chief Phil Dawson.
Large flames started to consume the housing development, located near Mount Albert Road and Ninth Line, around 6 p.m. Dozens of fire crews responded – taking up an aggressive attack.
“Fortunately they weren't occupied and there was no injuries to residents,” Dawson says.
This is the second time a massive fire destroyed multiple houses at the development site. On March 10, seven homes that were under construction went up in flames.
OFM investigators determined that fire was not suspicious in nature.
The homes were scheduled to be finished in August.
