A high-rise condo fire in downtown Barrie early Saturday morning forced hundreds of people out of their homes.
The Barrie Fire Department tells CTV News the fire broke out around 6:50 a.m. in the refrigerator of a 9th floor condo in a building along Dunlop Street, just east of Mulcaster.
At one point, thick black smoke was billowing out of the window of the building. Because of the volume of smoke that was spreading, the fire department evacuated the entire building.
Police also closed down some nearby streets as firefighters assembled their trucks and equipment. Fire Prevention Officer Samantha Hoffmann tells CTV News there were no injuries.
"The one resident who was in the unit was sleeping at the time, but thankfully there was a working smoke alarm in the unit, and that allowed the resident to escape".
"That's what we like to hear in these situations," said Hoffmann of the fact that there was an alarm in proper working order.
The fire caused around $100,000 in damage.
All of the residents have now been allowed back into their units. However, there's extensive damage inside the affected unit and the resident will not be allowed to return at this time.
