An early morning fire at a marina on Skeleton Lake in Muskoka caused more than a million dollars in damage.

The marina, one car and six boats were destroyed in the fire on Wednesday after investigators say a generator overheated. The fire started just before 3 a.m.

"This is where the people come to gather and to meet each other. It’s devastating to the community,” says Muskoka Lakes deputy fire chief Harry Baranik. “That building was built in 1960, and it's been there a long time for those people."

The generator was being used after the power was knocked out. Damage is estimated at $1.5 million.

"We believe that it was a little too close to the building, and the building caught on fire subsequently."

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been contacted and will assist in the investigation.
