Barrie Central Collegiate and Prince of Wales public school are now on the market.
The list price is $4, 962, 200 for the properties that sit on 7.4 acres in the downtown. The sale does not include Red Storey Field which is owned by the City of Barrie.
Prince of Wales, which was the county’s oldest public school, closed in 2011. Barrie Central, which is the county’s oldest high school will close in June.
The sale of the downtown properties comes after the Simcoe County District School Board failed to find a partner to help rebuild the aging high school. The school board had put out a request for proposal, but wasn't able to reach a deal.
Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman told CTV News the board's decision is leaving a hole in the downtown core. The mayor hopes that redevelopment of the site will be an ambitious and substantial plan.
Lehman stressed it's important that any future plan helps the downtown core.
After Barrie Central closes, affected students will go to Barrie North Collegiate and Innisdale Secondary School in the fall.
