A York Regional Police sergeant is one of five people charged in connection with an extortion plot.
In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Peel Regional Police say five suspects have been arrested in connection with an extortion plot involving Brampton real estate agent Dale Mundi.
An investigation into the matter was launched in February after Mundi contacted police saying "false information that was detrimental to his personal and professional reputation" was being widely circulated on the Internet. This was allegedly followed by demands of a large sum of money to have the information removed.
A 39-year-old Brampton resident has been charged with extortion and obstruction of justice.
Editor's note: The name of this suspect has been removed as charges against him were withdrawn in this case, according to an official letter from his lawyer.
Four other suspects are also facing charges.
Inderjit "Vick" Bains, 46, has been charged with extortion, two counts of criminal harassment and obstruction of justice. Zorawar Mahal, 25, has been charged with criminal harassment. Surjit Brar, 46, has been charged with extortion.
And Rajkanwar Mangat, 39, is facing multiple charges, including two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm and two counts of careless storage of a firearm.
