A woman is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash on Highway 400 today.
She was taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie. Orgne tells CTV News its air ambulance has landed at RVH, and will be airlifting the woman to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. She is listed in critical condition.
Police say nobody else was hurt.
OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford says the crash involved six vehicles. A lumber truck took out the guardrail underneath the 4th Line bridge in Innisfil, and the crash also involved a smaller truck and other vehicles.
“There were two vehicles in there. Both of them are pinned in between the guardrail and the truck. So when it's coming across into the northbound lanes … it t-boned these cars,” Woodford says.
According to police, the tractor trailer carrying lumber was travelling south when it lost control as traffic ahead of it was slowing for a crash further down the highway. The tractor trailer then rear-ended a cube truck, forcing it through the guard rail into oncoming traffic where it struck a Honda Civic and a minivan. The driver of the minivan had to be rushed to hospital. Two other vehicles in the southbound lanes were also involved.
Woodford says the guardrail prevented the tractor trailer from also crossing into oncoming traffic.
Traffic was at a standstill in both directions for hours as the highway was closed in both directions. Tonight, southbound lanes of Highway 400 are still down to one at the crash scene and police say northbound lanes are expected to reopen at about 10 p.m.
Police continue to investigate.
Highway 400 was also closed last Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, after 104 cars became involved in a massive pile-up. There were no major injuries in that incident.
