Police say the number of shootings in Toronto continued to climb in the hours after the force's chief issued a plea for public co-operation in halting a surge in gun violence.

They say 17 people were injured during 14 separate shooting incidents that took place over the long weekend.

There were no fatalities, though several of the victims remain in hospital due to their injuries.

The shootings took place throughout the city, ranging from the downtown core to a north-end nightclub where five people were shot on Monday morning.

The two most recent, involving three victims, took place after Chief Mark Saunders called on the public to help police find those responsible for the shootings.

Saunders says the recent spike in violence is not typical of the city.
