Thieves caught on camera after stealing from local legion: OPP

Two individuals have been accused of breaking into and stealing from a local legion, and provincial police are searching for them.

Officials say the two alleged thieves broke into the Royal Canadian Legion on Veterans Way in Gravenhurst around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

“While one person distracted a staff member, the other person stole several items from inside the legion,” said Const. Samantha Bigley with the Bracebridge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police.

The Legion was open for business at the time. Police say the duo stole memorabilia, clothing and a wheelchair among other items.

“They stole a wheelchair and it seemed like they utilized the wheel chair to hide many of the items they had stolen," said Bigley.

The incident was captured on video surveillance. Police have released the video along with the pictures on social media in hopes of finding the two responsible.

 

Many people in town are upset about the situation.“I mean they will stop at nothing, you know, desperate people do desperate things and it’s just sad," said Cheryl Dimner a local resident.

OPP have not identified the value of the items.

Police say the two suspects did not do a good job of hiding their faces and are unsure they even tried to in the midst of the alleged theft.
