In the final weekend of the Olympics – a special tribute for slopestyle skier Sarah Burke.

The ashes of the Midland native was spread on the halfpipe and near the Olympic Rings – in the athlete’s village in Sochi

Burke was a driving force behind bringing both the half pipe and the slopestyle to the Olympics in Sochi. The 29-year-old died after a training accident in Utah in 2012. Her freestyle coach, Trennon Paynter, spoke on Saturday and said he distributed Burke’s ashes in the halfpipe before the competition.

And before the start of the women’s freestyle halfpipe competition on Thursday – volunteers slid down the course, in the shape of a heart, all in memory of burke.
