The roar of snowmobiles can now be heard on trials across Simcoe County.

About 250 km of trails opened for riding this weekend in Clearview, Oro-Medonte, Springwater, and Wasaga Beach. That’s 25 per cent of the trails in the region.

“Typically we don't get into decent trail conditions like this until well into the new year,” says Craig Mayhew of Sno-Voyageurs.

This is one of the earliest starts to the season in the past decade. Last season the trails didn't open until mid-January due to the mild conditions, which also cut the season short.

The early blast of wintry weather gave trail groomers a two week head start, but the terrain is limited right now.

“You're going to fine some bumps and drifting here and there.”

Conditions are expected to improve in the days ahead as the groomers continue to pact the trails. Snowmobile clubs are urging sledders to stick to the trails that are open.

The Mid-Ontario Snowmobile Trails Association Plans to open another 100 km of trails in the Blue Mountains and Midland areas on Monday.
