A large sinkhole has closed a section of Highway 400 just north of Highway 88 near Bradford West Gwillimbury.
OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford told CTV Barrie one lane in the northbound and another in the southbound are closed. Woodford said the sinkhole was first discovered this morning when a traffic cone fell through the pavement of the median and had expanded through the day.
The sinkhole created headaches for commuters heading home from work and to the cottage this afternoon. Traffic had been brought to a halt and the northbound 400 was backed up as far south as Aurora Side Road.
With people heading to the cottage for the long weekend traffic in the area is expected to busier than normal until the sinkhole is repaired.
MTO engineers and heavy equipment have been on scene all afternoon repairing the three meter wide sinkhole. The Ministry of Transportation believes it was caused by a box culvert under the highway which had cracked.
There were no injuries or vehicles damaged.
The MTO expects to have the lanes reopened by midnight.
