A large group of people have been temporarily displaced after a fire at an Orillia apartment complex.

The City's fire chief says crews were called to the apartment building located at 80 King Street around 5:30 p.m. Thursday. When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke coming from a unit on the first floor.

About six people had to be evacuated by firefighters, while the rest of the building's tenants got out independently.

The fire was contained to a unit on the first floor, which suffered the heaviest damage. However due to the heavy smoke, all of the building's residents have been displaced for the time being.

One person was hospitalized as a precaution.

The cause has not been determined. Fire Chief Chris Ferry says that the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified.
