OPP report spike in wildlife-related collisions

Police are reminding drivers to be aware of wildlife on the roads as most of them are reported late in the year.
OPP Central Region reported more than 6,000 wildlife-related collisions between 2021 and 2023, with the numbers increasing each year. Specifically, there were 1,820 collisions in 2021, 2,053 in 2022 and 2,193 in 2023.
Police say most collisions occur from October to December with 85.5 per cent involving deer, as deer are more active during the fall due to their mating season.
Drivers are advised to reduce their speed, be aware of deer and moose warning signs, use high beams when necessary and to brake firmly instead of swerve.
