The highly-anticipated Bryne Drive South extension in Barrie opened Friday afternoon, and is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the city's busy south end.

Mayor Alex Nuttall cut a red ribbon Friday afternoon, marking the official opening of the new roadway.

"Finally' is the word I keep hearing about the completion of the Bryne Drive South extension, and it couldn't be more fitting," said Nuttall.Mayor Alex Nuttall cuts a red ribbon, marking the official opening of the Bryne Drive South extension in Barrie, Ont., on Fri., Sept. 27, 2024. The new $16 million road extension connects Bryne Drive from Harvie Road to Caplan Avenue, giving motorists an alternate route to avoid heavy traffic along Mapleview Drive West.

City officials say this extension is part of an ongoing effort to improve infrastructure and reduce bottlenecks as Barrie grows.

The new road features five traffic lanes, including a middle turning lane, sidewalks, and bike lanes.

Construction on the extension began over a year ago and was completed slightly ahead of schedule.

The north extension, however, remains stalled in the design phase as the City says property acquisitions have pushed timelines considerably. The latest update has the completion date set for 2031.
