Police in Barrie say a family out for a walk restrained a machete-wielding man who aggressively approached them Saturday afternoon.

Police say the man confronted the family on Collier Street, yelling at them, and violently swung the weapon, striking one of the family members.

The family managed to hold the armed man until officers arrived and took him into custody, charging him with weapons-related offences.

He spent the weekend behind bars to await a bail hearing on Monday.

Police say none of the family members sustained serious injuries.
