Local high school basketball team wins provincial championship

The Maple Ridge Ravens girls’ basketball team won a gold medal at the Girls AAA OFSAA Championships this weekend in Brampton, defeating the Mother Teresa Spartans 46-42 in comeback fashion.

Trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Ravens outscored the top-seeded Spartans in the final minutes to secure the dramatic victory.

The Ravens became the first team in Maple Ridge Secondary School history to win gold at OFSAA and the first girls’ basketball team from the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) to win an OFSAA championship since 1986.

Before the gold medal game, the Ravens had secured the second seed at OFSAA by going undefeated during the regular season and 36-2 overall. They then went on to win the Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) championship and GBSSA championship.

The Ravens also won medals at all six tournaments they competed in this season, with four gold and two silver. Their championship roster is as follows.
