A family is homeless tonight after home in the Township of Muskoka Lakes burned to the ground Thursday morning.

Fire crews were called to the home on Muskoka Road 118 around 9 a.m. and when they arrived the large two-storey house was engulfed in flames.

Witnesses say the smoke could be seen for several kilometres – as far as Bracebridge and Milford Bay.

Forty firefighters from Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes battled the flames on land and by boat – pumping water from Lake Muskoka.

Early estimates have the damage at $1 million but at this point the cause of the fire is not known.

Fire investigators are expected to remain on scene for several days and the Fire Marshalls Office has been called in to assist.
