After a pipe burst caused extensive flooding to their school, more than 200 students from Coldwater Public School are using Midland Secondary School on Thursday.
Simcoe County District School Board officials say incoming water pipe burst on Wednesday, Jan. 7 and flooded the school.
On Thursday, Kindergarten through grade 8 students from Coldwater navigated their way through the halls of MSS – unsure where things are.
“It’s a lot bigger than Coldwater – I mean I get confused just going down to the gym,” says Grade 8 student Jack.
“I think it’s a great adventure for our students,” says Coldwater principal Jan Decola.
The school closed on January 7th due to the extreme cold and while shut down; a pipe broke causing the major flooding.
“Interestingly enough it was not weather related – it was wear and tear. At this point we don’t have an estimate of what it’s going to cost but certainly the initial phases of the drying out operation is a pretty big operation,” says Peter Sloan with Simcoe County District School Board.
Coldwater Public School is expected to reopen on Monday but Mackenzie, who is in grade 2, says he enjoys hanging out with the high school students.
“I like skipping six grades.”
And some Coldwater teachers say maintaining the students focus in a new environment is challenging.
“We played lots of drama games, did a little math and writing this morning and just kind of rolled with it,” says Grade 2-3 teacher Tara Prohaszka.
