Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for much of the region as a deep chill is expected to drop temperatures to -30 C on Thursday.

The weather authority says a cold front will move across southern Ontario, bringing with it cold temperatures and gusty north winds.

As a result, Environment Canada issued an extreme cold weather warning on Wednesday for the following communities:

  • Angus
  • Barrie
  • Blue Mountain
  • Coldwater
  • Collingwood
  • Grand Valley
  • Innisfil
  • Lagoon City
  • Hillsdale
  • Mansfield
  • Midland
  • New Tecumseth
  • Northern Dufferin County
  • Northern Grey County
  • Orillia
  • Orangeville
  • Orr Lake
  • Owen Sound
  • Shelburne
  • Southern Dufferin County
  • Washago

Officials say this system will arrive in the region on Thursday and continue into Friday morning. The warning will likely be extended into other communities.

Environment Canada warns that these freezing temperatures can cause hypothermia and frost bite, especially for the homeless or those who work outdoors.
