With colder temperatures on the way, the County of Simcoe has activated the Alternate Spaces Strategy to ensure the health and safety of those living unhoused.

From now until January 6, depending on the weather, more warming and shelter spaces will open, including at 445 Blake Street, which was the site of the County’s Supportive Rapid Rehousing Program.

“Warming centre services create more opportunities for individuals living unhoused to come indoors when they are most at risk,” the County release stated.

Other warming centres include the Salvation Army and Elizabeth Fry Society, both on Bayfield Street.

The Lighthouse in Orillia and WOW Living (Out of the Cold Café) will initiate overnight warming centre operations at their discretion.

Anyone in need of shelter can call 211 to connect with shelter staff.

Individuals can access support to find shelter, housing, and other services while at the County-funded warming centres.
