Officials say staff at a Gravenhurst prison seized a package containing contraband, including tobacco and crystal methamphetamine, with an estimated institutional value of nearly $102,000 from a suspected drone drop.

In a release, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) said the package was confiscated at Beaver Creek Institution on Sunday.

Beaver Creek is a minimum and medium security federal institution.

CSC noted it prevents contraband from entering its facilities with tools like ion scanners, drug-detector dogs, and a telephone tip line for information about activities relating to security issues.

“These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions,” CSC noted.

Details surrounding who attempted to bring the package containing the unauthorized items into the prison were not disclosed.

There was no word on any arrests or charges.
