A committee has recommended the Town of Collingwood draw up new laws to deal with backyard chickens.
On Monday night, a standing committee recommended the town move forward with updating their bylaws to allow backyard hens within the municipality.
Council will now have to vote on the recommendation and engage in public consultation.
Collingwood’s current bylaws prohibit homeowners from having farm animals in their backyard.
Hundreds of people signed a petition asking the town to change its bylaws on the grounds of keeping hens as a sustainable food source.
While the town decides on new bylaws, a moratorium on enforcement has been issued for residents who own up to four chickens.
Collingwood isn't alone in dealing with this topic. Clearview, Barrie, and Newmarket are all exploring the idea.
