York Regional Police are reminding residents that cold temperatures don’t mean all ice surfaces are safe.

The recent changes in weather have altered the conditions of the ice, making the stability of the ice unpredictable and inconsistent.

YRP’s Marine Unit says Lake Simcoe and surrounding water ways are still developing as ice continues to form. The recent cold temperatures and snow accumulation may make the lake appear to be snow covered and stable; however, we would like to remind all citizens that ice conditions can vary drastically within areas in close proximity to each other.

Police are also reminding everybody that ice is never completely safe.

York Regional Police offered these safety tips to stay safe on the ice:

-       Know the condition of the ice before you go out and remember that changes in the weather can rapidly alter conditions on lakes and streams.

-       Wear proper clothing and floatation attire.

-       Never venture out onto the lake alone.

-       Ensure you have a cell phone with a fully-charged battery in the event of an emergency.

-       Tell someone where you are going, with whom and what time you will return.
