Brisk temperatures kick-start ice skating season, here are some locations to check out

It’s another crisp day for people across the region, but with those chilly temperatures makes for perfect ice conditions.

Despite frigid wind chills of minus 23 reported by Environment Canada on Sunday, Simcoe Muskoka residents are embracing the cold by lacing up their skates.

With plenty of scenic skating rinks and trails, the region offers a mix of outdoor fun and cozy treats like hot chocolate and mulled wine, according to Destination Ontario.

Here are some ice skating rinks that locals may want to check out during the winter season, all weather permitting:

Circle at the Centre Ice Rink

  • Located at 70 Collier Street, Barrie.
  • Skaters can enjoy the ambience of Downtown Barrie at the heart of City Hall.

Heritage Park Pond Rink

  • Located at 5 Simcoe Street, Barrie.
  • A natural outdoor ice rink set in the picturesque Heritage Park.

Woodview Mountaintop Skating

  • Located at 190 Gord Canning Drive, The Blue Mountains.
  • Over a one-kilometre loop offering daytime views and torchlit evening skates along the Niagara Escarpment.

Simcoe County Museum Skating Trail

  • Located at 1151 Highway 26, Minesing.
  • A one-kilometre trail suited for beginners, surrounded by historic buildings and hiking trails.

Skate Trail at Fern Resort

  • Located at 4432 Fern Resort Road, Ramara.
  • Over a one-and-a-half-kilometre forest trail featuring tiki torch lighting and a fire pit, with packages available for an all-inclusive experience.

Arrowhead Ice Skating Trail

  • Located at 451 Arrowhead Park Road, Huntsville.
  • A beloved trail that is known to get busy on weekends, mid-week visits are said to offer a more serene skate.
