Nearly three years since his girlfriend Shania Slater died of injuries suffered in a crash along Highway 11, Tom Newman took the stand to testify against the man charged in her death.

Newman didn’t waste time pointing the finger squarely at former friend, Andrew Fallows, the man accused of driving drunk and causing the deadly crash.

Newman testified that after an argument at a friend’s house, Fallows was asked to leave and for some reason, Slater went with him.

"When they pulled out, I saw Shania in the passenger seat and Andy driving," he told the court.

Newman admits they were all intoxicated following a night of partying in Barrie. After calling for a cab to take him back home to Sebright, Newman saw the crash scene.

"We were going up the highway and we'd seen Andy's truck up on the median and I told the cabbie to stop because that's my girlfriend in the truck and my friend."

By that time, Slater had been taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre. Newman got a ride with a tow truck to hospital. There he saw Fallows.

"I told him Shania was in bad condition and he just started to cry," he testified.

The defence attorney then turned the tables on Newman saying, “I'm going to suggest to you that you were the one behind the wheel of the truck."

Newman fired back by saying, "No I wasn’t in the truck. You can suggest all you want, but I was not driving the truck."

The trial's expected to last another week, with two more witnesses taking the stand on Tuesday.
