Barrie Food Bank extends fall campaign after coming up $50K short of target

The Barrie Food Bank is extending its fall campaign after the Thanksgiving Food Drive came up 20 per cent short of its goal to raise $250,000.

"Though we missed our target, we still count it as a win, having raised nine per cent more than last year," the organization stated in a Facebook post.

Food donations were abundant, with 150,877 pounds of non-perishable items offered, topping last year by 28 per cent.

"But our work isn't done just yet," the food bank noted in the online post. "Every contribution made between now and the end of the month will ensure the 7,000+ neighbours who rely on us receive consistent, equitable food support."

Nearly 40 per cent of those in need of the food bank's support are local children.

Monetary donations can be made online, or drop off a cheque or cash at 42 Anne Street South in Barrie during operating hours.

The food bank also accepts donations of non-perishable food items at designated bins at local grocery stores or directly at the food bank.

The Fall Campaign will run until October 31.
