Provincial police laid impaired driving charges after a pickup truck crashed into a ditch in Kawartha Lakes.

Police say officers arrived at the crash scene on Sturgeon Road in Emily Township last Thursday night to find the truck abandoned.

They called in the K9 unit and officers with the Emergency Response Team to help find the driver, who was located on Tracey’s Hill Road around an hour and a half later.

The 33-year-old man from Peterborough was arrested and along with the impaired driving offences, he was charged with having an insecure load and failing to remain at the scene.

Provincial police recently launched the annual Festive R.I.D.E. campaign to crack down on impaired drivers on Ontario roads.

In Kawartha Lakes, police say officers have responded to over 100 incidents involving allegedly impaired drivers this year.

“The OPP encourages all motorists to plan ahead: designate a driver, use a taxi, take public transit, or stay overnight. Even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can impair your ability to make sound judgments while driving,” the OPP stated.

The Festive R.I.D.E. campaign runs until January 1.
