Alleged mastermind behind Ontario woman's presumed death returns to court

Share

The man accused of orchestrating the disappearance and presumed death of his ex-girlfriend, Elnaz Hajtamiri, made a brief court appearance on Monday as he continues to seek bail.

Mohamad Lilo is facing first-degree murder and kidnapping charges in the Hajtamiri case.

Police say Hajtamiri was forcibly removed from a home in Wasaga Beach nearly three years ago, on Jan. 12, 2022, when three suspects posing as police officers claimed to have a warrant for her arrest.

Investigators say the Ontario woman was put into an SUV and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Lilo, who has been behind bars at the Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene since his arrest, applied for bail in late November after previously having been denied.

The Hajtamiri case involves roughly a dozen individuals, some of whom have had charges against them withdrawn or stayed by the Crown. Several others are expected to stand trial sometime in the new year for their alleged involvement.

During his virtual court appearance in Barrie on Monday, Lilo wished the court a happy New Year before the session concluded. He continues to maintain his innocence.

The matter was put over until January 13.

The allegations against Lilo have not been tested in court.
