A tragic house fire took the lives of two dogs the first day of the new year.

Provincial police and Essa Fire responded to a trailer home on fire at 62 Brentwood Road in Essa Township at 9 a.m.

Police say no one was home at the time of the blaze, but both dogs were located dead in the trailer.

The fire did not spread to the nearby residences and was extinguished several hours later.

The cause of the fire was determined to be a space heater and is not considered suspicious.

The roadway near the trailer home was temporarily closed and re-opened at 9:25 a.m.

The homeowner, Carl Bedal, will be staying with family as his home was a total loss.

His sister, Cyndi Bedal, has created a GoFundMe account.
