Two people were hurt Friday afternoon after an explosion at the Environmental Sciences Centre in Dorset.

Hunstville OPP were called to the building, operated by the Ministry of Environment, on Bellwood Acres Road where workers had been in the process of disposing of old biological samples.

The explosion happened at about 2:30 p.m. A 31-year-old Bracebridge woman was taken to a local hospital first, and then to a hospital in Toronto. She suffered burns to her upper body and was injured by glass fragments. A second employee was also hurt, police say.

The OPP’s urban search and rescue team was called in to help remove and dispose of the chemicals. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.
