A college student escaped uninjured after his SUV erupted into flames at a Barrie Esso station on Monday afternoon.

Fire officials were called to the gas bar at the intersection of Essa Road and Bryne Drive around 2 p.m.

Large plumes of black smoke and flames could be seen coming from the SUV’s front end.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the vehicle, thanks in part to the quick actions of an employee.

Samantha Hoffmann, a spokesperson for Barrie Fire, says the clerk was able to shut everything off before the fire could spread.

The vehicle suffered significant damage, but crews were able to save the owner's backpack and wallet.

The gas station was not damaged.
