Two aircraft from CFB Trenton are headed to an area south of Sudbury to investigate a report of a plane crash.

An official at the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre at the base says a call came in Tuesday afternoon that a single-engine Piper aircraft, with three people on board, had gone down in northern Georgian Bay.

The plane had left Sudbury earlier Tuesday for an unknown destination in the United States, but turned around when it reached Wiarton and headed back to Sudbury.

The reason the plane turned back isn't known.

OPP say the aircraft reported engine problems 60 kilometres south of Sudbury and 18 kilometres west of Key River. Police say radio contact was lost.

The dispatched aircraft are assisting West Parry Sound OPP with locating the plane.
