A unique area in Kawartha Lakes has been designated a provincial park to protect the area’s land and animals.

The Carden Alvar area is full of endangered species and will remain open for both bird watching and hiking.

“With a number of grass land birds and other species at risk and under pressure this remains an oasis. It's going to give it the highest level of protection and we are thrilled about that,” says the director of the Couchiching Conservancy Mark Bisset.

The park is almost 2000 hectares and was originally two cattle ranches.

It is home to more than 230 species of birds and over 400 types of plants.
