An earthquake shook the Collingwood area late last night, a seismologist confirmed.

Natural Resources Canada seismologist Cathy Woodgold tells CTV Barrie a shallow 1.9-magnitude earthquake hit around 10:47 p.m. yesterday about two kilometres north of Nottawa.

She says people felt it because it was close to the surface.

Previous minor seismic activity in the area has been written off as mining blasts. But the event last night wouldn’t have been a mining blast, Woodgold says, because of the time of night.
