An early morning barn fire on Wednesday in Innisfil has killed five horses.

South Simcoe Police says around 12:45 a.m. a passing motorist spotted flames and smoke coming from a barn on Innisfil Beach Road.

Police blocked Innisfil Beach Road while about 25 firefighters from two different stations put out the flames. The structure was partially destroyed and five horses died as a result of smoke inhalation. Crews were on scene until about 5 a.m., and low temperatures and high winds contributed to the challenging situation.

Innisfil Deputy Fire Chief Tom Raeburn says the tenant at the farm is distraught by the loss. The fire isn’t being considered suspicious. No cause has been determined.

The road was shut down for several hours while crews cleaned up the ice on the road.
